i have a small desk that faces south in our apartment in LA (kind of
east Hollywood), but we move frequently (about every 2 years) and are
about to move again to the midwest US. i go to libraries quite a bit,
as well as walking around to do "atmospheric" and visual research.
i do a lot of reading off line, either in the library, or on our couch
with checked-out or bought books. i can take the subway to the central
library in downtown.
but to get back to my current location... it's a cluttered desk in a
one-bedroom apartment that is part of a four-plex building, probably
from the 40s. it's green stucco on the outside. our neighborhood -
we're outside in it a lot as i bike and we walk our dog twice a day, so
i spend a lot of time thinking outside - is a largely spanish-speaking
working neighborhood with lots of families. it's defined by very large
commercial streets (Melrose, Santa Monica and Western) and a major
freeway (the 101) and so is often pretty loud. my desk faces a wall, as
windows are too distracting for me when on a computer.
