How Did I Get Here ?
Curated by Brian Reed
Opening Friday 20th May 6pm - 9pm
Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May 12 noon - 6 pm

----------------------------------------------------------
E:VENT is pleased to present 'How Did I Get Here ?' a showcase that brings
together four artists, who through the use of digital media express a
personal, social or political commentary. The common thread between the
works is a sense of mortality expressed with the use of parody and
absurdity as a critical tool.

Leon Barker
Work in progress
A sense of danger and the reality of physical harm prevail the sculptural
works of Leon Baker. Here he exhibits a work in progress, a kinetic
sculpture exploring gesture through action and reaction. ~~~ Tobie
Kerridge Life Event Using data retrieved every minute from the Justice
Department web-site, Life Event tracks the final days of Gary Lynn
Sterling on death row in Texas. When the execution of the prisoner is
reported on the site, the object will turn on. Brine shrimp or Sea
Monkeys are injected into the salt water, a pump and light source are
triggered, and the second syringe will feed the organisms periodically.
Until then Life Event is mechanically and biologically dormant.~~~

Control
A series of films showing an individual absorbed in an activity; a bike
ride, a console gaming session , waiting for a letter to be delivered. By
using 2 cameras these activities become split across 2 frames, dividing
the subject from the object of their attention. This division is
artificial, there are moments of synthesis and absorption as the
individual becomes fused with their object-world. ~~~

Jess Loseby
Andum
Jess Loseby takes her personal domestic environment as reference for her
exploration and fascination of borderlands and 'beautiful seams' between
the ubiquitous worlds of computing and the 'real' (domestic). The use of a
low-fi approach to new media encapsulates the female domestic
routine synonymous with repetition and triviality. ~~~

Dallas Seitz
Proteus Syndrome
Proteus Syndrome is the rare genetic disorder that
inflicted Joseph Carey Merrick, commonly known as the Elephant Man. The
physical effects of the disorder become part of Dallas Seitz gothic horror
lexicon in his continued self-colonization that remains at the centre of
his practice. ~~~
