CrossConnections is a yearlong residency project at the CCA Center for
Art and Public Life with visiting artist Taraneh Hemami and visiting
scholar Persis Karim. CrossConnections is intended to engage Iranian and
Iranian-American artists and writers in an intergenerational, creative
dialogue about issues of cultural identity, preservation, and
representation in a transcultural and transnational context. This
project also explores the diverse local and global influences that
contribute to unite or divide cultures and examines the contemporary
realities of Iranian-Americans in the wake of dramatic shifts in
American culture following the tragedy of 9/11.

of personal significance to explore their personal, political, and
social concerns as artists and writers.
rePresent is a work-in-progress exhibition that delves into ideas
developed through the CrossConnections project. The participants expand
on their personal reflections of the historical timeline created for "of
past and present" as well as create a collaborative pieces that focus on
dialogue between and across artists and disciplines. For 14 days at
Oliver Art Center, the artists and writers will interact with local news
and news from Iranian media, exploring "translations" of the cultural
and the political while looking at tools of representation of self and
The historical timeline is complemented by a layer of personal stories
of the Bay Area Iranian community through a new presentation of Hall of
Reflections, a collective art project created by Taraneh Hemami. Hall of
Reflections presents images and remembrances of the Bay Area
Iranian-American community through family photographs and text
documenting and memorializing the journey of Iranians to this country.
Audience members are invited to participate by adding personal memories,
media clips, and objects to the evolving collective portraits of time
