Lebanese artists and others discuss making art at a time of crisis

Programmed in the light of current events in the Middle East, 'Making Art in
Lebanon' is a spontaneous response to the crisis in Lebanon. The event gives
voice to Lebanese artists living in Lebanon and the UK who are determined to
show that life goes on.

“This is a chance for people to come and see for themselves how Lebanese
artists are living and experiencing what is happening- as well as how they
are looking to the future” says Joumana Mourad, one of the people
responsible for organising the event at Arnolfini.

Texts and short films, including Ali Cherri’s ‘Un Cercle Autour du Soleil’
and ‘beirutletters’, present a space for discussion and insight into the
Lebanese as thinkers and creators. There will also be a live conversation
via the internet with the Beirut-based writer Bilal Khbeiz.

Editors Notes
This event has been instigated by artist Joumana Mourad and the architect
Karl Sharro who is the translator of Khbeiz’s texts from Arabic to English.
Amongst others contributing will be Ruth Holdsworth, currently a PhD
Research Fellow with the Arnolfini who has recently written on one of
Lebanon’s foremost contemporary theatre-makers Rabih Mroué. The discussion
will be chaired by Rose Fenton, the former director of London International
Festival of Theatre (LIFT), an organisation which presented the work of many
Lebanese artists during a season entitled ‘Laughter’ at the ICA and The
Bargehouse in London in 2004.
