I have just been reading Molly Hankwitz's text regarding her visit to 
ISEA, worth a read...

-actually knowing the local.

knowing lots about the local area which one inhabits is so much more 
important than efforts, conscious or unconscious to import and implant 
universals, grafting them onto a place and applying them to the 
surroundings without respect for context. to engage in the latter is 
colonialism and reproduces the discomfort which colonialism has always 
done. i guess one could argue that its interesting how the two go 
together, or intersect, local with universalist overlay, but i think the 
process of interaction must be done very carefully. the worst thing 
about the mainstreaming of situationism into a middle class "playground"-
