Here, have my _last_ collection of coppers (my2pents)...
I suppose it depends on how you think of it. In terms of medium, compare
the softwares the net artist uses with the paint a painter uses. How
creative is it to 'invent' your own paint, when what you really want
to be doing is focusing on what you want to paint? And you can't just
generalise and say that because a net artist (any) does not write their
own software to create their net art with, that the end product,
whatever it may be, is unauthentic! For an almost paradoxical reason,
you can't write a software program without using software. If a net
artist must program their own software, a programmer must design and
impliment their own operating system, an operating system dude must hack
their own system architecture, a bus designer should most definately
design and build their own microchips and without a doubt the CPU
designer should be experimenting with atoms and DNA and all that kind of
microscopic shit. In short: everyone should quit their field and get
their hands dirtier with lower-level duties in order to be qualified for
the higher-level stuff they originally set out to explore.
So I guess I'm still standing by my original position that they're
extremely ignorant for that tiny little paragraph which skips aside all
the hard work that people all around the globe have been working on for
quite some time now, completely voluntarily, writing their own software
which is not for profit, is open to modification, bastardization and
customization, and freely distributable.
Paul Virillo, Sylvère Lotringer, I'd like to introduce to you Linus
Torvolds and Richard M. Stallman, that's it shake hands.... Please make
nominations for Net-Artists who should also attend this most important
meeting.
I'll let you in on a little secret: net artists have been writing their
own software for years.
