MOGADISHNI is pleased to present the exhibition ³Unconventional Weapons²
by Italian artist Antonio Riello (born 1958).
In the exhibition ³Unconventional Weapons² Riello displays ceramic guns,
bombs e.g. which imitate the real thing but because of the material they
are in fact harmless.
He challenges discrepancies between material and subject, form and
content. The works are designed, coloured and perfected and the artist
uses ceramics as material for his different types of weapons.
The game of antagonisms appeals to Riello. The clash between the
ornamentation and the character of the objects implementing war, crime
and death adds an ambiguity where the objects become kitsch-like.
Because of the ornamentation and via the material the objects associate
to something feminine and soft. The ceramic sculptures have a poetic
sensitivity even though the originals are instruments of danger and
violence in the public consciousness.
Riello works with betrayal through appearance; a thing appears to be,
but is not. Riello confronts the viewer with his unconventional weapons
where authentic look-alikes become useless. The ceramic art works emerge
as ambivalent, beautiful and fragile sculptures. We welcome you in the
