"Emacs" is a text editor that is very easy to hack and extend. A "Mac"  
is a computer made by Apple Inc. This got harder to explain when Apple  
released their first "eMac". ;-)

The reason I mention Emacs is that it is very much not a black box.  
You can read and modify the source while it is running. Free Software  
in general is less of a black box than proprietary software. And art  
that is software should be Free Software.
