Call for artists
The PULSE FRINGE FESTIVAL is a multi-disciplinary festival of
contemporary performing arts providing an annual platform for the most
innovative and fresh theatre, visual arts, dance, live art, mixed media
and music. PULSE celebrates new and emerging artists and fresh
approaches to performance in all disciplines, nurturing artistic
ambition and excellence and showcasing the most cutting-edge,
boundary-breaking performing arts from the region and beyond.
As with the performance strand of this year's PULSE the organisers are
very keen to offer opportunities to emerging artists who intend on using
the festival to further the development of their career. They are
particularly interested in hearing from artists with work in development
that want to put it 'out there' for the first time.
The Town Hall Galleries, Ipswich are looking for artists to participate
in a 2-week long contemporary art project. The final project format will
be curated from the applications received with works being considered
for display across gallery, theatre (main house & studio) and public
spaces. This flexible approach provides the chance to build a project
from the submissions. Responding to the breadth of work submitted to
deliver interesting and surprising outcomes.
Existing work and proposals for new work will be accepted across all
media however applicants must realise that due to limited financial
resources there is no financial support available for the making of new
work and artists fees. Through the opportunity advertising, marketing,
venue(s), technical and curatorial support will be provided.
Deadline for submissions: Mon 18 Feb 2008.
Confirmation of offers: after Fri 22 Feb 2008.
Notes for applicants:
Applicants are expected to consider the spaces prior to preparing an
application. It is very important that they think about the limitations
imposed by the venues as some modes of display and installation might
pose problematic. Building information, plans and images available from
the Town Hall Galleries website & the Wolsey Theatre website
Venue description:
The Town Hall Galleries are housed within a Victorian civic building
located in the heart of Ipswich. The main interior space (Gallery 1) was
an old courtroom before being used as a Council Chamber. It is defined
by characteristic high ceilings and a central glass dome, and has some
architectural features such as columns and plasterwork. There is a
permanent long plinth that bridges a staged area and the main gallery
floor (clues to the rooms past as a courtroom). Two other gallery spaces
occupy the building. Gallery 2 is an exhibition/ retail space for
Suffolk Craft Society makers, and Gallery 3 is managed by Colchester and
Ipswich Museums and hosts community heritage projects.
Please note the galleries will be closed from Tue 4 Mar 2008 until the
opening of PULSE. Those wishing to view should contact the gallery,

The New Wolsey Theatre on Civic Drive is a 400 seat theatre which
presents a diverse range of work. The theatre is a PULSE performance
venue and in 2008 the front-of-house areas will be used as display space
for contemporary art.
The New Wolsey Studio on St George's Street is the central PULSE venue.
The auditorium seats 100 but the foyer on the ground floor will become a
display space for contemporary art.
Visit the Wolsey Theatre website
Public spaces. The New Wolsey hopes to use its outdoor terrace as a
PULSE performance space and as a display space for works of art. If your
submission is for an outdoor piece please consider security and safety.
Smaller pieces may be moved indoors at night but ideally outdoor work
should be in position for the period of the festival.
