a porch or open area.. gosh.

my understanding goes "in continental europe a gallery is more like a  
shopping arcade or a store.. supposedly that is in fact the  
underlying principle of galleries in england (and perhaps the  
states), too; although they are more so just places to go an look at  
art - where as a museum would be a place to go and look at historical  
artefacts, artistic or otherwise. thought i'm lead to believe that on  
the european continent one would visit museums on both accounts.

it was decided in the first days of collecting objects which contain  
interesting culture (he begginning of the rennaisence through  
humanism) that all collections should be free for public viewing.

interesting considering the first proper public uses of art were to  
commission works which could communicate ideas to the illiterate public.
