Artsadmin announced today an open call for five artists' commissions
worth a total of £100,000 to create a major series of site-sensitive
works for Bethnal Green Old Town Hall. The building used to be the
headquarters of the pre-1965 metropolitan borough and was Tower
Hamlets Town Hall for a time until the borough decentralised itself in
the 1980s.

The town hall is being converted into a 99-room hotel, with a high-end
restaurant, bar, conference and meeting rooms. The building features
late Victorian and Edwardian architectural and design features and is
being beautifully restored, as well as featuring an additional new
floor. The architect, rare, is designing and bringing this historical
building into the 21st century while remaining sensitive to its
original features. The Town Hall will open in Spring 2010.

Artsadmin will commission a number of artists to create art-works
responding in sensitive and novel ways to both the building itself and
its relation to local context and history.
