turn off the internet!

for example, on Gentoo Linux:

xxxxxx at localhost ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/net.eth0 stop
 * Bringing down interface eth0
 *   Stopping dhcpcd on eth0 ...                                  [ ok ]
 *   Removing addresses

and to turn on the internet (if you've turned it off,
or not set it to start automatically):

xxxxxx at localhost ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
 * Bringing up interface eth0
 *   dhcp ...
 *     Running dhcpcd ...
dhcpcd: version 5.2.2 starting
dhcpcd: eth0: rebinding lease of 999.999.9.99
dhcpcd: eth0: acknowledged 999.999.9.99 from 999.999.9.999
