Thanks, there's some good stuff in that 2nd link. 

After all the years of using linux i still have to do an internet search to find a file named xxxxx in directory yyyyy.

I've never learnt emacs and only recently learnt enough of vim to do basic editing (and to exit it without killing it lol).
