Future under Construction ‒ Social Media and Media Art in China
June 19th 2013, 7 pm
Panel discussion with
Zhang Peili, artist, Hangzhou
Hito Steyerl, artist, Berlin
Isaac Mao, blogger, Shanghai
Moderation: Li Zhenhua, curator, Zürich/Beijing
Is there “contemporary art in China” or “contemporary Chinese art”? This
question has been the subject of major controversy in artistic circles
in China. Is new media art shaped mainly by stylistic or formal
conventions? Why was media art the first kind of experimental art in
China to receive state funding? From the beginning of video art in the
nineties to the social networks of our own age, the discussion will
explore the question of what kind of new images of the future are
generated by the new media, and to what extent they change our awareness
of time and history.
