Double Blind Studies is a suite of gelatin silver print photographs 
created from abstract drawings. Following the scientific ’double blind 
study’, I put drawings into a testing space of photography. The site of 
drawing appears like a laboratory slide under a microscope, or a scene 
of pinned specimens on the wall. The photographs account for the 
mechanical shoot in a literal way- push pins are visible, drips of old 
paint on the wall behind. But the photographs deliver ambiguity. 
Just-the-facts yields to primitive science. The air is dense with 
texture like chalk dust on a blackboard. An approach to life.

In this interview, film scholar Louis-Georges Schwartz talks with artist 
Christina McPhee about process, life and time in the drawn space of the 
double-blind.

Études en double aveugle est une suite photographique sur gélatine 
argentique créée à partir de dessins abstraits. À l’instar des études 
scientifiques en « double aveugle » j’ai testé des dessins dans un 
espace photographique. Le champ du dessin apparaît comme dans une 
diapositive de laboratoire sous un microscope, ou une scénographie de 
spécimens épinglés sur le mur. Les photographies rendent compte 
mécaniquement de la prise d’une façon littérale — les épingles 
d’accrochage, des gouttes de vieille peinture sur le mur derrière, sont 
visibles. Mais les photographies délivrent une ambiguïté. Les clichés 
tels qu’ils sont cèdent à la primauté de la science. L’air est dense et 
sa texture comme de la poussière de craie sur un tableau. Une approche 
de la vie.
