Hi Dave,
Glad you like the piece. It evolved from thinking about 'privacy', and how many people seem quite content for 'some' of their life to be monitored.
Much of the current discourse looks at obvious electronic signatures - e.g. email metadata: "I don't mind the government reading my emails, I have nothing to hide."
This work is trying to point out that every moment is potentially observable, and that things like email traffic are the tip of the iceberg in terms of what can be monitored.
The act of viewing an artwork is an incredibly personal experience, and feels very private. The piece tries to show that even this kind of experience is observable and recordable.
Everything we do is 'data' in some sense, it's just that we don't have enough of the right kind of sensors to capture it all - yet.
Trying to have a 'private moment' in a state of constant surveillance begins to feel much more like the world of Winston Smith...
