A user revolt at Slashdot is revitalising Usenet, the pre-Web newsgroup
system:

You can get free usenet accounts from many providers (search the web for
"free usenet account"), e.g.:

http://www.eternal-september.org/

And use a news reader such as Thunderbird, Pan, Unison or Groundhog on
just about any OS or device:

The Slashdotters are at the comp.misc newsgroup, which you can find and
subscribe to in any of the above news readers. They're looking for other
newsgroups for non-computing news. Maybe the old art newsgroups need new
users...
