the quiet meditation of stationary steam engines
-- almost silent, the 25' Corliss was running
quickly and barely audible.

one of the recordings is short-wave, at roughly
the same frequency; you can hear the whistles in
the distance. so which machine was generating a
signal?

the whisper of steam, hydraulic force, heating
elements at a distance, a star or log, as the
world slides against itself; I think of this as
a cascade of intervals.
