Hi Alan,
I did the first one in 2000. I just keep doing them. The audio loops are independent of the video loops. So a lot of the art of it for me is getting a feeling of how the two work together without being able to force them in lockstep synch. They are always phasing in and out of each other, but still they keep a kind of oblique time with each other. None of it is “video." It’s just still images and animated gifs and code. Some of it used to be Flash and Director, but I went back and re-coded it so now it’s all just html/css/javascript + gifs, jpgs, and audio.
It is like a subjective journal using the browser widow and the code of the page as the journal. Not a blog with just text or a tumblr with just discrete images. The source visuals are usually found online and I modulate and animate them (that is the play/damage), but sometimes they are my own photographs. View Source on each page for audio and visual source credits. I always finish them in a few hours. If my other art projects are like tournament chess, then these playdamage screens are like speed chess.
Used to be my constraint was that each page be under 100K. Then 350K. Now I try to keep each page under 1000K. So it is a game of minimal maxilism. How to tease out the greatest visceral affect from the least bandwidth. The themes repeat themselves because I keep thinking about the same things I guess. Jesus’ face, my wife’s face, my own face, faces and bodies and process code of other internet art people, remixing my own prior code and visuals. There was a season when I made about one per month. Then sometimes I will just make one per year. I will just keep making them until i die.
Best,
Curt
