Roman Numerals, Codework
The iconography of roman numerals is far more complex than
usually realized; it includes elements of counting rods, the
abacus, ancient potters' marks, Roman and other standards,
economy of writing spaces, and so forth.
This amazing 1848 book of arithmetic and accountancy presents
the most complete description of the symbols which might still
have been in use at the time; see the last three plates. The
first place is the title-page; the second presents the names
of very large quantities in use at the time.
