There's another image on the web of a carving from St Mary-le-Bow which
looks like a sibling sculpture:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Facial_Sculptural_Detail_in_St_Mary-le-Bow.jpg
. No explanation of who this one is meant to represent either. I
suspect, from a quick search, that both carvings are the work of Alan
Collins - his Guardian obituary
(https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/nov/09/alan-collins-obituary)
mentions 'carved portraits at Sir Christopher Wren’s City church St
Mary-le-Bow in the early 1960s', which looks about the right period for
the style of carving. I haven't been able to unearth any information on
who they're portraits of. Next time I'm in London I'll have to see if I
can get along to the church and pick up a leaflet.
