Now was he saying this to the looking glass, or to
his reflection? Or was he saying this to himself,
as his thoughts washed up in fog and dissolution?

Answer: He was saying this to others.

And who was holding the glass?

Answer: His reflection.

And on what shores?

Answer: His own.
