[NetBehaviour] 60 years ago today - music transmission across 4 generations of Catlows

beautiful, graziano! & annie, i'm sure i've seen you wearing those socks :)

my mother was almost constantly knitting or doing something with her
hands (she dabbled in macrame, & after i'd left home she got into
spinning & weaving for many years; she was also an excellent woodworker
& made lots of things like coffee tables & bookshelves) but i don't
think i have any photos at all of her doing any of these crafts. it was
just what she did, & not something that anyone ever thought to document.
of course there are many photos of us wearing the results of her efforts
- we were the home-made-clothes kids at school & i can remember feeling
great relief when at high school, she decided to buy our school uniform
jerseys instead of knitting them herself as she usually did. looking
back on it, i'm proud that she made so much of our clothes - of course
lots of mothers were still doing this in the 60s and the 70s, but in nz
in the 70s - at least in the neighbourhood where i grew up - it became a
sign of wealth & success to be able to buy your childrens' clothes
rather than make them yourself. my parents were not at all concerned
about outward signs of wealth & success!

my grandmother did a lot of knitting too, including lovely crocheted
blankets that i have in storage somewhere; & after a long time of
enjoying oil painting, she then started making tapestry copies of her
oil paintings. my mother has one of these pairs, & from a distance it's
almost impossible to tell which is the painting & which the tapestry. i
don't have a photo of those either, but can photograph them tomorrow.

what i do have is a photo of a beautiful sewing box that my aunt gave
me, which has been passed down over many generations in the family;
we're not sure but think it originally belonged to, & was probably made
by, a great-great-great-aunt of mine. it has various mementos in the
lower part including a funeral card & lock of hair, & tiny matching box
for pins or buttons.

h : )

(i've deleted the other photos because the email is getting huge in size
& i'm sure we don't need to be receiving multiple copies of them all)
