Re: Material culture and data sets - If the model we work through
is general enough, it should be able to take in just about
anything. I know this stuff is already big in archaeology - and
one selling point is that the VEL has already done archaeological
research with the large scanner - on literal sites, as well as
tombstones, etc. etc. One use which might appeal to them is the
latter - tombstones as texts - given for example the
wear-and-tear on cemeteries in WV - for example the one next door
to you!

So one approach might be to generalize the notion of 'text' to
include just about any artifact that can be taken either as a
