THE UNPRECEDENTED - March 2020

The unprecedented collects every sentence that I’ve received via email
through March 2020 that includes the word ‘unprecedented’, used in relation
to the current coronavirus crisis. For this project, I’ve been looking into
newsletters, announcements, personal correspondence and spam.

The current condition, its effects and solutions, are frequently defined as
‘unprecedented’, for lack of a better word. At the same time, the repetition
turns an unspeakable crisis into something manageable. It becomes a known

in the near
future, the COVID-19 crisis will no longer be newsworthy. We’ll get used to
it. Language contributes to this process of normalisation. The
unprecedented becomes
business as usual. This collection premediates that future condition, and
captures the unprecedented as it becomes preceded.

This is an unprecedented time in our history.

The current pandemic is unprecedented in modern times.

We hope that you, your family, and loved ones are all healthy during these
unprecedented times.

Our country is facing unprecedented times right now.

The interventions being made to manage the spread of coronavirus are
unprecedented.

I’m writing to thank you for all your hard work, especially as the
coronavirus outbreak continues to escalate, bringing unprecedented events
and great concerns.

The Coronavirus pandemic is causing unprecedented movement in financial
markets.

As the spread of coronavirus presents an unprecedented challenge for our
city region, we are working in a range of ways to offer support to our
local NHS acute hospitals.

Thanks so much for your valuable input as we find our way through this
unprecedented situation.

We would like to remind you that in the face of this unprecedented health
situation, we are all involved in ensuring the smooth operation of your

maintain the University’s financial stability.

As well as creating significant and serious issues, we are aware these

to this global challenge.

We’d like to thank you all for your support and understanding during this

Do something which you enjoy, which will help to relieve the stresses which
this unprecedented public health crisis will bring.

It’s important that Americans know that their President and their
government are behind them 100%, which is why President Trump has announced
he will be taking unprecedented emergency action to provide financial
relief for workers who are ill, quarantined, or caring for others.

We have welcomed a number of steps taken by the University so far during an
unprecedented crisis – particularly the move to suspend face-to-face
teaching, the increase in people working from home, and the assurances that
all staff including hourly paid and other precarious workers will still
continue to be paid is welcomed by all I’m sure.

Over the last few days the executive team and the trustees of the BGI have
been discussing this unprecedented crisis and how the NVM should react.

We are in an unprecedented situation.

experiencing an unprecedented high volume of requests.

Numerous countries around the globe have adopted unprecedented measures to
limit the further spread of the virus and reduce the number of future
victims.

The scale of the crisis facing our country today is unprecedented.

The COVID–19 crisis is forcing unprecedented changes on all of us, not just
in the way that we live our own lives but in the way we consider the lives
of those around us.


On the other hand, the present, unprecedented situation has made media and
communication issues more topical than ever.
