Gamma Festival announces an international open-call for Gamma_LAB XR

Experimental laboratory Gamma_LAB was launched by Gamma Festival and ARTYPICAL art-practice in 2019. The aim of the project is to promote knowledge about modern technologies and facilitate their usage in the field of art and culture, as well as to create unique interdisciplinary projects. The first laboratory - Gamma_LAB AI - was dedicated to the usage artificial intelligence and machine learning for music creation process. The results of the laboratory were presented in the AI-stage of Gamma Festival in July 2019. Further, joint laboratories of Gamma_LAB team and MUTEK festival were organized in Tokyo in November 2019 (MUTEK AI Music Lab) and Montreal in March 2020 (MUTEK AI Art Lab).

In May 2020 we launch a new laboratory – Gamma_LAB XR. It is dedicated to the whole range of different technologies known under the common name XR that is used to create virtual, augmented, hybrid reality and immersive environments. The main idea of the laboratory is to create new both artistic and technological XR works.

Gamma_LAB XR consists of a series of theoretical and practical workshops with the participation of an international team of facilitators, also using remote participation opportunities. The team of facilitators includes Elena Malakhatka (KTH Royal Institute, Sweden), Jonas Johansson (Beckmans College of Design / Hyper Island / Berghs School of Communication, Sweden) and Mathieu Le Sourd (CODE University of Applied Sciences, Germany/France), and also experts including Andrey Drobitko (SketchAR, Russia/USA), Georgy Molodtsov (Russian VR Seasons, Russia) and Evgeniy Lobanov (Institute of Environmental Design of Saint-Petersburg State University of Technology and Design, Russia) and PHYGITALISM co-founders Ivan Yunitsky and Oleg Yusupov. The curator of Gamma_LAB is Natalia Fuchs, art historian, new media researcher, and co-producer of Gamma festival and co-founder of ARTYPICAL art relations practice. Thus, the laboratory combines the expertise of a team that is actively involved in the development of innovative technologies in the global cultural landscape.

The results of Gamma_LAB XR will be presented at the exhibition as part of the GAMMA festival in July 2020. Participants will also be involved in creating a collective art project related to the study of augmented reality in the urban environment, which will also be presented at the festival.

The laboratory is designed for media artists, designers, architects, programmers, developers and researchers in the field of XR. Recruitment of laboratory participants is carried out on the basis of a preliminary selection based on evaluation of the portfolio, motivational letters and concepts of critical projects related to both the idea of social isolation and the rapid virtualization of the contemporary world. Send your motivation letter, concept and portfolio to xrworkshop at artypical.com until May 1, 2020 (inclusive). On May 3, 2020, will be announced the results of the selection. Participation in GAMMA_LAB XR is free for the selected candidates. Transportation and living expenses during the Laboratory are paid by the participants themselves if physical presence is possible. The organizers provide visa support, as well as the travel of the best Lab participants to the GAMMA festival in July 2020. If physical participation is not possible, we will provide an opportunity for your remote participation in the laboratory.
