Azure and I were outside the club. We could here the music, but
couldn't make out much of it. It was cold and rainy and windy but
not so much as you'd know you couldn't stand there. There were
masked people scurrying about. In the club, Carter was singing
"Derelict." It was a good song. You couldn't hear it well. Sondheim
was playing ratty as usual, some instrument or other. It sounded
like a mess. We were forlorn. We couldn't afford to enter. We'd be
asked to leave. We were asked to leave. The tables were full. The
light was smoky. Outside fog. The streetlight cast a yellow glow.
I'd say it was November. November was always the month for the
lost. The song fit our mood but didn't change it. The world was
thud. Maybe we walked home in the rain. I don't remember. We didn't
pass anyone. Everything was masked.
The song DERELICT
If there were
There would be
If there is
There was
{For no one
{And no place
Scattered topologies
At times there seemed
A place or where
An origin
Would be
{If there were
{There was not
A place where place would be
There were lines
Among lines
Somewhere
There was a place
{There were curves
{To hold something
A memory of a place
Names float
And disappear
Signs leave
Have never been
{In or out
{Nothing remains
A moment embedded in space
