Doom

http://www.alansondheim.org/aphorism.jpg

This is the story of the aphorism of necessary doom, which appeared
to me at once, after all these years of thinking through futurism,
beginning with a course called "the most pessimistic" I taught in
the early 1970s. We knew then what we see now; it was embedded in
cultures, in whatever was mean by "being human." The aphorism came
to me several nights ago; I dictated it. As you can see below, it
was mangled by the artificial intelligence machinery of misguided
and poor interpretation. It finally appears at the other end of
equally misguided attempts at reconstruction.

I'm told I'm too negative, too pessimistic; that the world will be
a safe haven, that good news will triumph. This doesn't reflect -
not only the course of human history, but the very interiority of
being human. I hate that what I taught half a century ago is come
to pass, almost like clockwork. The course was called "The Year
3000," a title designed to give students a chance to create
scenarios of the far future. But the emphasis was on the early
2000s, what was already visible, what was already occurring, even
at the early stages of the digital revolution.

Reconstruction:

The most fundamental and primitive instict we have is the
instrumentalism of hope. In analysis it's this that creates a
bypass or detour to the beginnings of the creation of culture. Once
the project towards death is recognized, all resources come into
play to ensure the infinite extension of life. Nothing works that
way, naturally; culture takes over, and human history can be
considered the application of tacit knowledge to survival. Today
this is the hopelessness of hope; we know the carrying capacity of
the planet is fundamentally exceeded by humans, who are elimnating
the last remnants of wildness in the world. There isn't enough to
go around; there isn't enough of anything.
