A dan moi from a maker (I was told "by the side of the road") in
Viet Nam; it's undecorated and somewhat skewed for the bass
fundamental it produces. Its incredibly soft sound works
brilliantly for a form of improvisation that emphasizes breath,
breathing, something from the heart. I like to think of the
Apple Store as from the heart, almost unbearably so, definitely
overbearingly so. I like to think of the dan moi maker and his
instruments against the pristine deeply sterile beauty of the
entrapped protocols of the Apple empire. I like to think that
the sound of the dan moi and this dan moi in particular cuts
through everything in that other world; after all, it's sound,
not sight, or rather primarily sound and just enough surface
(including the thin wooden case) to spark a movement towards
grace in the world.
